Mockernut hickory is a moderately sized tree, growing 50-70 feet in height, native throughout Tennessee. The name mockernut supposedly comes from the size of the nut in the shell. While the shells may be large, the amount of meat inside is relatively small, mocking the efforts of those who attempt to harvest the nut. Mockernut hickory is found on a range of soils in full sun. It grows well with post oak, white oak, yellow-poplar, loblolly pine, shortleaf pine, and Virginia pine.
