Description
Pawpaw is a large shrub or small tree often found in small groupings in the forest understory. When crushed, the leaves are aromatic and commonly compared to the scent of motor oil. Pawpaw is usually found in moist bottomlands or, sometimes, in the understory of mesic hardwoods. Although its wood is not commercially valuable, pawpaw’s sweet fruit is highly sought after by wildlife and humans alike.
