Description
Northern red oak is a moderately sized tree, growing 80-90 feet in height, native to all of Tennessee. Northern red oak can tolerate some shade. It is found on moist soils, most commonly on northern- and eastern-facing slopes. Northern red oak commonly grows in a mixed forest with eastern white pine, eastern hemlock, white oak, chestnut oak, red maple, sugar maple, American beech, and black cherry. Northern red oak is a very valuable commercial species for its high-quality lumber used in furniture, cabinetry, flooring, and molding.
