Description
Persimmon is a moderate sized tree growing in the midstory or overstory of mixed hardwood forests. Persimmon drop yellow, orange, or dark red fruits in fall. Fruit is very astringent until fully ripened, usually after the first frost. Persimmon grows well in partial shade to full sun on a range of soil types, commonly found with yellow-poplar, northern red oak, white oak, sycamore, sassafras, red maple, sweetgum, and loblolly pine. Persimmon’s white sapwood is incredibly heavy and hard, used for golf-club heads, billiard cues, and weaving shuttles.
