Description
Shellbark hickory is relatively rare among hickories. It occurs sparsely with red maple, sweetgum, American elm, swamp white oak, white oak, swamp chestnut oak, and ash species. Shellbark hickory acorns are large but difficult to crack and eaten by a variety of wildlife; acorns are edible. Shellbark hickory is tolerant of shade and grows in well-drained bottomland soils.
