Sourwood

Description

Sourwood is a medium-sized, deciduous tree that can grow upwards of 30-50 feet tall in a pyramidal shape when mature.  It is often found on ridges of gravelly soil adjacent to streams. The species has slender, drooping branches of dark green foliage which contrast sharply with its white flowers in mid-summer, when few other plants are flowering. It likes full sun but can be grown in partial shade.  Sourwood honey and its wood, which is used for tool handles and in crafts, are highly prized.
