Description
Staghorn sumac is a shrub or small tree commonly found growing in thickets. Like all sumacs, the staghorn has showy, dark red fruits that appear in a large cluster at the end of branches. Fruit holds onto the branch well into winter making sumacs an important food source for songbirds, game birds, and white-tailed deer. Plant staghorn sumac in full sun. Staghorn sumac can propagate vegetatively to create dense clumps of clones. Be prepared to cut back these sprouts or plan for a dense clump at time of planting.
