Description
Sweetgum is a large tree, growing 80-120 feet in height, native throughout Tennessee. Sweetgum is easily identified by its five-point leaves and spiny “gumball” fruits. Sweetgum grows rapidly on a wide range of soils but must have full sun. Sweetgum is often found with willow oak, swamp chestnut oak, pin oak, white oak, northern red oak, sycamore, yellow-poplar, American elm, loblolly pine, and red maple. Sweetgum is not adapted to fire. Its wood is commercially valuable as pulpwood, plywood for furniture, and (occasionally) paneling and cabinetry.
