Description

Yellow-poplar, also called tulip-poplar and tuliptree, is a large tree growing 90-120 feet in height, and is Tennessee’s State Tree. It is native throughout Tennessee on a variety of sites. It develops rapidly on moist, well-drained soil on slopes facing north and east. Yellow-poplar trees can grow in pure stands or in a mixed stand with white oak, northern red oak, swamp chestnut oak, sweetgum, loblolly pine, and eastern white pine. Yellow-poplar displays showy yellow-green flowers with orange accenting. Yellow-poplar is commercially valued for its use in plywood, cabinets, pulpwood, and (occasionally) dimensional lumber.
