Description

Hybrid chestnut is a cross of American chestnut with Chinese chestnut. American chestnut was once a major component of hardwood forests throughout the eastern United States. The plentiful nuts were arguably the single most important wildlife food source in hardwood forests. Nuts were also sold roasted in East Coast cities as a delicacy. In the early 1900s, an introduction of the Chinese chestnut blight wiped out the American chestnut. Decades of research into crossing the disease-resistant Chinese chestnut with American chestnut has yielded some promising results.
