Shortleaf Pine

Description

Shortleaf pine is a large tree, growing 80-100 feet in height, known for its characteristically straight growth form and lack of lower branching. Shortleaf pine will grow on a variety of sites, but it is most common on drier slopes with poorer fertility. Shortleaf pine is often associated with loblolly pine, Virginia pine, white oak, black oak, post oak, southern red oak, sweetgum, yellow-poplar, and hickories. Shortleaf pine should be planted in full sun, as this species is intolerant of shade. Shortleaf pine is one of several species sold as southern yellow pine at lumber yards. Its heavy wood is used for pulpwood, lumber, high-density beams, plywood, poles, and pilings.

All pine species are treated with Permethrin insecticide.
