Description
American sycamore, also called buttonwood, is a large tree growing 80-120 feet in height. American sycamore is easy to identify by its large, multi-pointed leaves and peeling tan bark. American sycamore tolerates shade and grows quickly. American sycamore is common in bottomlands that do not flood. It is often found with sweetgum, river birch, black willow, green ash, boxelder, red maple, and water oak. Historically, American sycamore was used by pioneers and colonists to make bowls and utensils. Today, American sycamore is valued for pulpwood, baskets, barrels, and inner panels of furniture.
