Allegheny chinkapin produces burs covered in needle-like spines and containing a single nut within. Allegheny chinkapin is planted for its wildlife value as a food source for squirrels, white-tailed deer, and game birds in fall and winter, and for its landscaping value to provide privacy along borders and fences.
